Electronics manufacturing services companies build circuit boards and finished electronic products for other brands, from 10 prototype boards to millions of phones. This roundup maps well-known EMS providers by tier, links each to its official site, and explains which tier fits a startup at each stage. It sits under electronics contract manufacturers, which covers how to pick and manage one.
How the EMS tiers are drawn
The industry sorts providers loosely by size. We use four tiers, defined by the kind of program each typically takes on, not by a revenue cutoff.
Tiers blur. Large providers run new-product introduction sites for small builds, and regional shops grow. Treat the tier as a starting filter.
Global tier 1 electronics manufacturing services companies
These providers build the highest-volume consumer and computing products in the world, with factories across Asia, the Americas and Europe.
A startup rarely starts here. When it does, it is usually because the product will ship in very large volume or the provider takes a strategic interest. One public example from the index: Apptronik announced a manufacturing partnership with Jabil in February 2025 to build its Apollo humanoid robots, with Apollo units also piloted on Jabil sites (TechCrunch, 25 Feb 2025).
Large and mid-size EMS providers
This tier builds much of the world's industrial, medical, aerospace, defense and data center hardware. Programs are smaller than phones and more regulated, and the providers keep engineering teams for new-product introduction.
Certifications matter more in this tier. Medical programs look for ISO 13485 and aerospace or defense programs for AS9100, at the specific site that will build your product, not just somewhere in the group. Our notes on the medical device contract manufacturer and military PCB assembly name the standards involved.
Regional EMS providers
Regional providers run one to a handful of sites and take high-mix, low-to-mid-volume work. For many hardware startups, this is the right first production partner: the founder can reach an engineer, visit the line and change the design between builds without a contract renegotiation. Europe has a strong regional layer; three examples with public profiles:
Every industrial region has dozens more, many private and without much web presence. Local hardware founders and component distributors' field engineers are the best directory. For the U.S. side, PCB assembly in the USA covers when domestic shops are worth the premium.
Online and quick-turn assemblers
Online services quote from uploaded Gerbers, BOM and centroid files and ship assembled boards in days. They are where most prototypes start.
Seeed Studio is also in the index as a maker of dev boards and sensor modules. Online services publish rate cards, so you can model cost before you call anyone; our walkthrough of reading a PCB assembly service quote uses one line by line.
Matching tier to stage. Prototype and EVT builds: online or regional. DVT and pilot: regional or a mid-size provider's new-product team. Production: whichever tier fits your annual volume, your certifications and your customers' locations. Moving tiers costs a requalification, so pick the production partner a build early and run pilot there.
What every EMS engagement includes
Whatever the tier, an EMS contract settles the same handful of terms. Read them before the unit price.
Excess and obsolete liability surprises founders most. When a forecast drops, the provider can bill for the parts it bought against it, so forecast honestly and agree the liability window in writing.
Frequently asked questions
What is an electronics manufacturing services company?
An electronics manufacturing services (EMS) company builds electronic products and assemblies for the brands that design and sell them. Services range from PCB assembly alone to full box build, test, supply chain management, repair and logistics. The customer owns the design and the brand. The EMS provider owns the factory, the process and, usually, the purchasing of components.
What is the difference between EMS and a contract manufacturer?
The terms overlap. Electronics contract manufacturer and EMS provider describe the same kind of company. ODM, original design manufacturer, is different: an ODM designs the product, often from its own reference design, and sells it to brands that put their name on it. Some large providers do both, with EMS and ODM divisions under one roof.
Which EMS companies work with startups?
Almost any provider will quote, but fit depends on volume. Online assemblers and regional EMS providers take small runs and are used to changing designs. Mid-size providers take startups with a credible path to volume or a regulated product. The largest providers usually engage through dedicated new-product teams or when a program is already large. Ask each who their smallest active customer is.
How do I choose between EMS companies?
Match the provider's typical program size to yours, then check certifications for your market, such as ISO 13485 for medical or AS9100 for aerospace. Look at where it builds relative to your customers and parts, how it handles engineering changes, and who your program manager will be. Ask for references from customers at your stage, and visit the floor before committing a production program.
